FHPA Meeting

We have arrainged to have the Forest Hill CLC opened a half an hour prior to the Ward 2 meeting. We would like a good turnout for this meeting. Daryl Klienhentz is scheduled to be there and we have a plan for the Glenwood Triangle to present. See you there, 2/26/09 at 6pm.

Status

We have been working very hard to get the land for a park. However, the city has been working for seven (7) years acquiring the land and convert the mixed used property to single family residental. We have been informed that the city has no room to negotiate on releasing even a portion of the property for the park.
There is a silver lining. We have been requested to provide a wish list of items for improveing the Glenwood Triangle.

Blinn Street Vacated

The City of Akron passed Ordinance 301-2008 vacating Blinn Steet. This is excellent news as it officially confirms what Daryll Klienhentz told citizens at the November Ward 2 meeting.
At that meeting Daryll advised that the Planning Department would be blocking off Blinn Street by the end of the year. Recently FHPA was advised that this work would be completed by the Highway Department (Public Works).

Battle for a Park

Akron Beacon Journal
Letter to the Editor
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Since last August, there has been a movement to create a park in the Forest Hill area of North Akron. There have been petitions submitted with 250 names, and contact has been made with all members of the Akron City Council, the mayor and the Planning Department. We have communicated our intentions clearly, but we have been put off and, now, basically ignored.

The question remains: What is more important, a park serving over 1,000 people or 17 new houses in an area where there are perhaps 40 houses now for sale or vacant?

We are a grass-roots movement involved in and for our neighborhood, and we refuse to go away.

FHPA: We Need You to Act Now!

Ken Blackerby, co-founder of the FHPA, and David Thompson, FHPA's Secretary, each released two very important messages over the last two days. Both deal with our campaign to get the land between the corners of Dan and Evans, and Damon and Hollibaugh developed into a neighborhood park. Neither contain good news.

It looks as if our plans for a park are in jeopardy. Many in our community understand that this land would be best utilized if turned into a park and don't want to see this opportunity slip by! We hope that you don't want it to slip by either, so contact Councilman Kilby, your representatives, and members of the press (through emails provided below, or through other means) to let them know that you stand with the citizens of the Forest Hill community on this!

Sincerely,

Nathan M. Blackerby

Members,

We are in need of some noise, comments, and just plain help in our effort to establish a park for the Forest Hill area.

The planning department is saying they will be breaking ground and have a house built by spring.
Please contact all political, legal, and media sources at your disposal. Bring up this issue with all your friends and neighbors. We need the city to know that we are not going away and we will not be ignored.

David Thompson
Forest Hill Park Association, Secretary

Hello Members,

This is Ken Blackerby. The latest info from downtown including Mr. Kilby has not been very cheerful in the sense that we can get a park here. So I have written to the Beacon Journal the Plain Dealer, T. Sawyer, Vernon Sykes, T. Ryan, Sherrod Brown, WNIR, Summit county Council, and the Summit county Democratic Party. I feel that these communications will both inform and get people on our side. We should not be ignored. I think we have been very patient with Akron City Government. Call or contact any of the above to let them know that there are people who want a park.

Thanks,

Ken

Council advises to follow-up with Planning Dept.

We have received some messages from City Council members. Kelli Crawford, Ward 10 Councilwoman and Chairwoman of the Parks and Recreation Committee, has refered our petitions to the Planning Department. Cheryl Prough, Clerk of Council, let us know that "the only way the property would come before Council would be if the Planning Department requests changing the zoning of the property". Furthermore she let us know that our "councilman can request the zoning be changed, which as you know is Mr. Kilby".

So, there it is. Guess I'll be blogging about zoning soon.

Ward 2 Meeting a great success!!

We had a great meeting with Ward 2 Councilman Bruce Kilby. Bruce was joined by Darryl Kleinhenz, of the Development Services Division; Clay Kozar, the former COPs officer and now a detective; and Steve Bushco, the city liason with the schools.

There were 32 residents present at this meeting! A significant increase from previous meetings.

Darryl Kleinhenz reviewed the status of the city's plan for vacant land which we'll call the Forest Hill Memorial Park (the city calls it the Blinn Alotment).

Don Lee reviewed some historical reasons why this area should be preserved. Based on the history of the Mountain Lion streetcar it sounds to me like the park is a historical site.

The Forest Hill Park Association signed up four more members and got six more signatures for the park petition.
